Farmhouse Fantasy
Inspired by discussion in the NSR discord server a month or so ago. Our quest-goers are not gold-toting itinerants but townsfolk picking up arms to defend their village.
There's a lot you can do with the concept— community building and abstract wealth were mentioned— but it got me thinking about what old drama might arise when you're traveling with people you've known your whole life. Roll for bonds like you'd roll for eye color. Everyone rolls twice, once for each person to their right and left.
1. ___ saved your life when you were attacked by wolves.
2. ___ is your child's spouse. You want to keep them safe.
3. You have fond memories of youthful pranks with ____.
4. You know ___ was responsible for the fire 10 years ago.
5. You think that ___'s religious practices are heretical.
6. __'s family took you in as their own when you were orphaned.
7. ___'s family and yours have a generations-long feud over something long forgotten.
8. ___ has never thought that you were a suitable spouse for their child.
9. ___ has helped you hide an embarrassing addiction.
10. You were injured by goblins because ___ fell asleep on watch.
11. You feel that ___ is more important to the community than you are.
12. You're close with ___'s parent. You want to make sure their last child isn't lost to the forest.
13. You've always been fascinated by tales of ___'s heroism. You want to impress them.
14. As children you and ___ were responsible for ___'s sibling's accidental drowning.
15. You were close with ___ until they married the person you loved.
16. You have a friendly rivalry with ___. You often go hunting together.
17. You're ___'s cousin visiting from a few towns over.
18. __ defended you when a scandalous rumor was running through the community.
19. Something about ___ deeply and irrationally irritates you.
20. You consider ___ to be your most trusted friend.
Determine PC ages after rolling bonds.
Anyway these aren't new ideas but I feel like this sort of thing isn't discussed much in OSR spaces which is unfortunate because I think that party tension is a great fantasy genre trope and I love campfire roleplay. Also something something dichotomy of mundane problems and death and doom.
There’s potential here for Electric Bastionland style tables where each result elicits two 1d6 rolls for more information and starting items ie. "__'s family took you in as their own when you were orphaned." What apprenticeship did you have under their mother or father? A fond memory that you have of ___ is. What happened to your parents?
